Pakistan's Highest Civilian Honour — the Star of Excellence
Sitara-e-Imtiaz (ستارہ امتیاز), meaning "Star of Excellence," is Pakistan's highest civilian award. It is bestowed by the President of Pakistan upon individuals who have rendered distinguished services of a very high order to Pakistan, or made outstanding contributions in any walk of life — science, arts, literature, sports, medicine, education, or public service.
The award was established in 1957, shortly after Pakistan's independence, as part of a national honours system to recognize exceptional service. The name draws from the Mughal tradition of bestowing a "star" (sitara) as a symbol of honour upon distinguished individuals.
Since its establishment, Sitara-e-Imtiaz has been awarded to over 529 individuals — from Nobel Prize-winning physicists to Olympic athletes, from pioneering surgeons to celebrated artists — each representing the finest Pakistani achievement.
The Sitara-e-Imtiaz is awarded to individuals who have:
The award is a five-pointed star finished in gold, bearing the crescent and star of Pakistan. It is worn on the left chest and accompanied by a certificate signed by the President of Pakistan. The award is announced annually on Pakistan Day, March 23.
